ABSTRACT

Research indicates the COVID-19 epidemic changes people's health and diet, However, this has not yet been well discussed in Taiwan, especially in college students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of distance learning on college students' dietary patterns, sleep quality and perception of stress during the COVID-19 epidemic in Taiwan. 265 college students from a university in Taichung were recruited in this study. The self-administered online questionnaire was used to investigate the changes in eating behavior, sleep quality, and perception of stress before and one month after distance learning, and further analyzed the relationship among them. The questionnaire contains demographic information, dietary questionnaires (including six categories of food intake behaviors, convenience food intake frequency), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (Chinese 14-item PSS). The results showed that the proportion of college students to meet the recommended Taiwan Dietary Guidelines amount in vegetables (21.9%), fruits (27.5%), meats and dairy products (15.8%), and nuts and seeds (11.3%) were lower during distance learning. The frequency of convenient food intake was lower during distance learning (13.31 +/- 6.10 points;never to occasionally). During the distance learning period, there was a significant negative correlation between dietary patterns and sleep quality (r = -0.160, p = 0.009), It shows that college students with higher dietary pattern scores have better sleep quality. During the distance learning period, there was a significant positive correlation between sleep quality and perceived stress (r = 0.320, p < 0.001), It shows that college students with higher levels of stress had poorer sleep quality. This study found that the lower the perceived stress of college students, the better their diet and sleep quality;conversely, the higher the perceived stress, the worse their diet and sleep quality. Studies have shown that a healthy, balanced diet can reduce the risk of getting various diseases. Therefore, in the post-epidemic era, it is recommended that schools increase the accessibility and availability of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, nuts and seeds on campus to make it easier for teachers and students to obtain such healthy food in order to achieve the goal of promoting balanced diet.Copyright © 2022 Nutrition Society in Taipei. ABSTRACT

The reason for the publication of this article was the increase in the number of children with long-standing organic foreign bodies in the respiratory tract, the late diagnosis of which causes severe complications. The article presents the three most significant cases from the general series, when the diagnosis and treatment tactics at the stages of treatment were associated with errors both at the prehospital stage and in the hospital. In the first clinical case, as it turned out, the child had aspired multiple foreign bodies. The first bronchoscopy revealed one solid foreign body. Due to severe fibrinous-purulent endobronchitis and contact bleeding, the bronchoscopy procedure was aborted. However, after 10 days, the child independently coughed up the second seed, which was a surprise to us. Control bronchoscopy after 3 weeks revealed no foreign bodies. In the second clinical observation, a child developed bronchiectasis due to a long stay of a foreign body in the respiratory tract. The third case demonstrates the diagnosis and treatment tactics in a child with a foreign body against the background of a coronavirus infection. In the first and third cases, the results of treatment were satisfactory. In the second case, a long stay of peanuts in the respiratory tract led to bronchiectasis in the lower lobe of the left lung, which required its removal. In the follow-up, there are no complaints, the child grows and develops according to age. The study analyzes the mistakes made at the stages of diagnosis and treatment of children with foreign bodies in the respiratory tract. Conclusion. Young children with long-term and atypically current respiratory diseases, dubious and even normal radiological picture with the absence of comprehensive information on the anamnesis of diseases should alert the doctor to the possibility of aspiration of a foreign body in the respiratory tract and serve as the basis for performing bronchoscopy.Copyright © 2023 National Academy of Pediatric Science and Innovation. ABSTRACT

One constraint of Thai soybean production is the volume of seeds used for cultivation in the dry season or after the rice season. PhuPha Man district, KhonKaenprovince, in Northeast Thailand, faces the same problem and can be solved by producing seeds during the rainy season for use in the dry season. The collaborative brainstorming to participatory action development employed in this community-based soybean production project involves four steps: (1) needs assessment, (2) planning, (3) implementation, and (4) evaluation. From 2019-2020, a total of 40 farmers jointly participated in this project: 20 from the Non-Korm Sub-district and 20 from the Sawab Sub-district. They agreed to implement three missions: (1) Farmer group management. A Community-based Soybean Seed Production Center (CSSPC) was established in each area. Each CSSPC was responsible for determining the structure and role of management, including the implementation of disciplines. (2) Seed production management. During its implementation, a shortage of rainfall and drought occurred from September to October 2019, causing soybean production to decline. Moreover, product harvesting and project evaluation took place at the site during the COVID-19 pandemic from January to May 2020, influencing the ability of farmers and facilitators to work together on group activities which required delicate management of the monitoring, control, production, exchange, and learning to solve problems. (3) Seed purchasing and distribution management. Rainfall shortage and drought influenced the ability of the farmers to produce the required soybean seeds. ABSTRACT

Nigella sativa is an annual herb of the buttercup family, native to Western Asia and North Africa. Its seeds are used as a spice, especially in india and the Middle east, but also for medicinal purposes. Nigella sativa seeds contain a large number of bioactive substances, which have a number of pharmacological effects. It is a forgotten medicine and has been used in various systems of traditional medicine for thousands of years, but studies of modern medicine in recent years show that its therapeutic use can be much wider. it is likely that it could also find use in the treatment of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and some neurodegenerative diseases. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Prepubertal vaginal bleeding outside the neonatal period is always abnormal and is very alarming to both parents and physicians. The variable etiologies of vulvovaginitis are the most common causes of vaginal bleeding during the prepubertal period. We report a series of three cases observed during covid" period of 2020-2022. Case report: two patients 8 and 9 year -old girls, were refered to pediatric secondary center due to of external vaginal bleeding. Hormonal levels were pre-pubertal and bone age was not advanced. Both girls were hospitalized and sellar X-ray and pelvic MRI were done during further course, not revealing the etiology of bleeding. Six months after the first bleeding, they were reffered to a pediatric gynecologist where foreign bodies (grass seed) were found during vaginoscopy. Third patient, a 3-year- old girl, was examined by her pediatrician because of heavy bleeding. Hormonal analysis and bone age were not suggestive of precocious puberty. Additional analyses revealed elevated alpha fetoprotein level (>5000 IJ,), which led to the diagnosis of yolk sac tumor in vagina wall, which was then confirmed by vagionoscopy and biopsy. It is important to perform vaginoscopy in premenarchal girls with repeated vaginal bleeding because in patients older than five years, a common reason for vaginal bleeding is foreign body but in younger patients, the primary goal is to exclude a malignant tumor.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

Purpose: A new human coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), triggering pneumonia, is termed as Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19). There is an alarming situation now as this new virus is spreading around the world. At present, there are no specific treatments for COVID-19. Nigella sativa is known as Prophetic Medicine as its use has been mentioned in Prophetic Hadith, as a natural remedy for all the diseases except death. Seeds and oils of N. sativa have a long history of folklore usage in various systems of medicine such as Unani and Tibb, Ayurveda and Siddha in the treatment of different diseases and ailments. The aim of this research is to provide a potential inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. Method(s): The Molecular docking tool was used to optimize the binding affinities of chemical constituents of N. sativa with SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. Result(s): Many constituents from N. Sativa have shown better binding affinity than reported drugs with SARS-CoV-2 Mpro i.e., the alpha-hederin, Stigmasterol glucoside, Nigellidine-4-O-sulfite, Nigellidine, Sterol-3-beta-D-glucoside, Dithymoquinone, beta-sitosterol have binding affinities (kcal/mol) of-9,-8.1,-8,-7.7,-7.7,-7.4,-7.4, and-6.9 and number of hydrogen bonds formed are 06, 04, 03, 03, 03, 00, and 01, respectively. Conclusion(s): There is rationale and pre-clinical evidence of the effectiveness of N. Sativa that it may be helpful for the treatment of COVID-19 and can serve as a potential natural candidate. However, more studies should be conducted to collect high-quality data and scientific evidence of N. Sativa to use it against COVID-19 clinically.Copyright © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The ongoing pandemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS COV-2) has jeopardized people's health and the global economy. The infection caused by these viruses inflicts immunosuppression and an unprecedented range of symptoms leading to mortality. At this stage, there are no countermeasures or medicines to overcome rapid disease proliferation and aberrant immunological response. Objective(s): The study aims to determine different immunomodulatory therapeutics that could be potential agents to alleviate viral and other lethal infections and possibly rejuvenate immunological and tissue repair response against this disease. Method(s): A review of the literature was performed by screening different scientific databases to procure various immunomodulatory therapies for the treatment of SAR COV-2. Result(s): A comprehensive literature review indicated that different foods rich in vitamins (A-D), selenium and iron can enhance immunological response against various deleterious infections, whereas different nutritious drinks that include hydrogen-enriched water and green tea alleviate inflammation and elicit wound healing properties. Black cumin seeds and Garlic have a myriad of biological activities due to abundant bioactive phytochemicals that play an important role in the elimination of various bacterial and viral infections. Conclusion(s): These foods/supplements are relatively safe to consume and possess high toxicity profile and could be a potential nutritional intervention in order to create adequate immunity within a population to fight against this prevailing infection.Copyright © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected around 13 million people and has caused more than 5.7 lakh deaths worldwide since December 2019. In the absence of FDA approved drugs for its treatment, only symptomatic management is done. Method(s): We attempted to uncover potential therapeutic targets of spike, helicase, and RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 employing a computational approach. The PDB structure of spike and RdRp and predicted structure of helicase proteins were docked with 100 approved anti-viral drugs, natural compounds, and some other chemical compounds. Result(s): The anti-SARS ligands EK1 and CID 23631927, and NCGC00029283 are potential entry in-hibitors as they showed affinity with immunogenic Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of the spike pro-tein. This RBD interacts with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE2) receptor, facilitating the entry of virion in the host cells. The FDA approved drugs, including Nelfinavir, Saquinavir, Tipranavir, Setrobu-vir, Indinavir, and Atazanavir, showed potential inhibitory activity against targeted domains and thus, may act as entry or replication inhibitor or both. Furthermore, several anti-HCoV natural compounds, including Amentoflavone, Rutin, and Tannin, are also potential entry and replication inhibitors as they showed affinity with RBD, P-loop containing nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase, and the catalytic domain of the respective protein. Dithymoquinone showed significant inhibitory potential against the fusion peptide of S2 domain. Importantly, Tannin, Dithymoquinone, and Rutin can be extracted from Nig-ella sativa seeds and thus, may prove to be one of the most potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors. Conclusion(s): Several potential ligands were identified with already known anti-HCoVs activities. Fur-thermore, as this study showed that some of the ligands acted as both entry and replication inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2, it is envisaged that a combination of either inhibitor with a dual mode of action would prove to be a much desired therapeutic option against this viral infection.Copyright © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

Background: The recent emergence of fungal resistance strains has caused concern in medical settings. Medicinal plants continue to be viable sources of bioactive chemicals with therapeutic potential. These compounds can be extracted in different techniques using various solvents that give rise to a wide variety of extracted bioactive compounds that act as anti-fungal. The research aimed to evaluate the effect of fenugreek seed extracts on resistant isolates of Candida spp. isolated from sever COVID-19 patients. Methodology: The study was conducted from August 2021 to November 2022 at Al-Imam Al-Hussein Medical City and Al-Hayat Respiratory Diseases Units. Under a specialist's physician's supervision, severe COVID-19 cases were collected. The collected 455 sputum samples were examined directly and cultured on Sabouraud's Dextrose agar (SDA) media;growth colonies were distinguished and used Grams stain with the API system before the antifungal susceptibility test was performed in accordance with clinical and laboratory standards institute (CLSI 2020) by disc diffusion method to differentiate the resistance microorganism. The extraction process was conducted using the soxhlet technique (100 grams of seed powder and 800 milliliters of solvents (chloroform, methanol, and water) for eight hours. Electrical rotatory evaporators were used to evaporate the extract to get the concentrated crude extracts. FTIR and GC-MS instruments used to detection of bioactive compounds in crude fenugreek seed extracts(aqueous, methanol, and chloroform). Then, different concentrations of each extract (25, 50, 100, and 150 mg/ml) and their effect against the tested resistance study isolated were examined by well diffusion method and Minimum inhibitory concentration was measured. Result(s): A 455 were enrolled in this study. Patients' ages ranged from 20 to 91 years (mean 52.23, SD 15.009). This study indicated that more than half of the samples were males [(262) 57.6%] and [(193) 42.4%] were females. The FTIR and GC-MS showed the methanolic extract potent the most bioactive compounds, followed by the chloroform and water extracts. Evaluation of antimicrobial effects at 50 mg/ml, the methanolic extract showed the greatest effect, with a mean inhibition zone of 9.33 mm and a significant value of 0.01;at 100 mg/ml, the chloroform extract showed the next greatest effect, with a mean inhibition zone of 10.33 mm and a significant value of 0.005. At 150 mg/ml, the aqueous extracts showed the least effect, with a mean inhibition zone of 8.33 mm and a non-significant value of 0.024. Conclusion(s): Candida spp. were most frequent isolated yeast from sputum of patients with severe COVID-19. Methanol extract was the most effective anti-candida, followed by chloroform extract, and the aqueous extract was the least effective. The most effective anti-candida drug is ketoconazole.Copyright © 2022.

ABSTRACT

Nigella sativa (Family Ranunculaceae) is a common medicinal plant all across the world. It is quite popular in different traditional medicinal systems such as Unani, Ayurveda, Tibb, and Siddha. Oil and Seeds have a long tradition of folk medicine utilized in different medicinal systems and food. The seeds of N. Sativa have indeed been widely applied in the treatment of many diseases, ailments, and also as an immune booster. ABSTRACT

A once-in-a-century pandemic Corona has a terrible impact on economy all around the world during the entire fiscal year 2020-21. Although the covid outbreak has caused a surge in electronic payments in the retail market, the Indian economy has shown resilience because to its strong fundamentals. When compared to the financial year prior to the pandemic, 2019/20, digital payments (retail) have greatly increased in both volume and value terms. The beneficial outcome has demonstrated India's digital payment system's ability to process a significant number of financial transactions via digital channels. The significant increase in digital payments that will occur in 2021 and 2022 will be successfully managed by the payment system thanks to the emonetization seeds planted on November 8th. ABSTRACT

Methods: Participants of the 13 week program, Partner's Aligned in Transformative Healing (PATH), receive an Anti-Inflammatory Pantry Kit containing one retail size quantity of extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, green tea, ground flax seed, dried lentils, maple syrup, ground turmeric, ground ginger, and coconut milk. During week 5 of the program participants spend 90 minutes with the registered dietitian (virtual or in-person, depending on the group) for an interactive education and sensory experiential. Participants leave with the food and knowledge of the ingredients and how to use them. The registered dietitian procures the ingredients and puts together the kits. Food costs are reimbursed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont as it has been incorporated into the program's bundled payment model for each PATH participant. Results: What emerged from this experimental adjustment to the curriculum is an innovation that has engaged participants to make modifications to their diets to increase whole food sources of omega-3 fatty acids, phytonutrients, dietary fiber, zinc, selenium, plant-based protein, and healthy fat;all of which are evidenced based nutrients that have been demonstrated to impact inflammatory and immune systems in individuals experiencing chronic pain. Background: The Anti-Inflammatory Pantry Kit was designed during the covid-19 pandemic as a way to continue to offer hands-on culinary medicine to participants at the University of Vermont's Comprhensive Pain Program in the comfort and safety of their own home. Conclusion: Culinary medicine at the Comprehensive Pain Program looks different now that it did prior to the pandemic and the changes have been received with enthusiasm. The Anti-Inflammatory Pantry Kit is a dynamic tool for nutrition and culinary medicine education for chronic pain participants. This tool and approach to medical nutrition therapy has been made sustainable by the reimbursement by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont and the engagement of participants.

ABSTRACT

Background. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a newly recognized inflammatory syndrome that occurs post Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. It affects multiple organ systems - particularly cardiac, gastrointestinal, dermatologic and neurologic. Clinicians may have difficulty diagnosing MIS-C due to its novelty and similarity to Kawasaki disease. Our goal was to use machine learning to predict whether children would have MIS-C based on symptoms and laboratory values. Methods. A retrospective review was conducted of patients admitted to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital who were suspected of having MISC. Demographic, symptom (such as fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, shock, etc), and laboratory data were collected from the electronic medical record. For the 115 patients and 20 laboratory values, there was a total of 130 missing values (5.7%). Missing laboratory values were imputed using the median value based on the presence or absence of MIS-C. The data were split into a training (93 patients, 80%) and testing (22 patients, 20%) set. The training set was used to train a random forest model and the testing set was used to evaluate model performance. R 4.0.2 was used for modeling with the following packages: tidymodels and randomForest. Results. There were 115 patients of which 49 were females, and 77 were diagnosed with MIS-C. The median age of the patients with MIS-C was 115 months and 79 months for those without MIS-C. In the testing set, all 15 patients with MIS-C were classified correctly but of the 7 without MIS-C, the model predicted 4 of the patients correctly. This gives a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 57%. When changing the seed and testing set, the sensitivity remained 100% but the specificity improved to 86%. The random forest algorithm showed that the most important features were pro-calcitonin, ferritin, pro-BNP, and CRP. Conclusion. During the height of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, many children were being admitted with suspected MIS-C, but clinicians struggled to confirm the diagnosis. We have found a model predicting which of these patients had MIS-C with high sensitivity. This model is a first step of many toward creating the foundation of personalized medicine for children.
